What is the difference between a fitted and a universal direct vent termination?

The main difference between a fitted Homestyle direct vent termination and a universal Homestyle direct vent termination is how the termination mounts to the flue tile.

With a fitted Homestyle direct vent termination, the body and the bottom mount is sized to fit eight specific flue tiles. The fitted mounting style is the most popular because it does look identical to regular chimney cap and mounts just like one too. The fitted Homestyle direct vent termination has a stainless steel, recessed mounting frame which allows it to securely rest on the flue tile. Masonry thumb screws have also been incorporated into each side to pierce the flue tile for a proper fit. As the size can not be altered, the fitted mounting style can only be used if the flue tile size of the installation is known before hand. The body sizes for the Homestyle Collection can not be customized however a custom universal plate can be ordered for larger or irregular flue tiles. A bottom view of a fitted termination is below.

In the case of a universal Homestyle direct vent termination, the body is sized to three specific flue tiles but the bottom mount has an oversized or universal plate. This universal plate will vary in size depending on the body size to the direct vent termination. While you need to know the flue tile size ahead of time with the fitted version, the universal mount will allow one direct vent termination to cover many different flue tile sizes. Simply match up the best body size for the installation; then cut and break the universal plate to fit the specific the flue tile size when installing. So if you have a rectangle choose, the rectangle shaped body. If you have a large square flue tile, choose the larger square bodied termination. This universal mounting style is also useful if the flue tiles for the installation are damaged or missing. A bottom view of a universal termination is below.
